What information is contained in the bank branch code?

I am talking about irish bank accounts. I've searched, but couldn't find it. I would say that the bank branch/sort code, xx-xx-xx is telling you which bank, which branch, and which type of account.? Or am I mistaken? (I'm not talking about the bank account number, which is quite different.)

thanks.

What information is contained in the bank branch code?
Yes, you are right.

The sort code only really tells you which Bank (the first two digits), and which branch - The last four digits.

The exception to this is head office accounts which show as (XX - 00 - 00) but can be domiciled anywhere in the bank network.
Reply:There are no banks in Ireland, only Pubs.
